Rising above challenges: The unsung heroes of international student recruitment

Rising above challenges: The unsung heroes of international student recruitment

Just a few short months ago, we were facing what seemed like an insurmountable challenge. In May, UK international student numbers were drastically down by 45%, casting a shadow of uncertainty over the sector. Fast forward to today, and by keeping calm and carrying on, we’ve clawed our way back to a much better position. A huge improvement and a clear testament to the tireless efforts of staff and agents working on the frontlines of student recruitment.

Turning a challenge into motivation and drive

This recovery didn’t happen by chance. It’s thanks to the countless hours, hard work, and resilience of the people driving this industry forward. There’s no doubt that the sector has faced negativity and pressure. Many have felt deflated but luckily not defeated, as Winston Churchill  said, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”

The staff in admissions and compliance teams in universities across the UK are the engine room of the sector, sometimes overlooked but absolutely essential to its success. Their efforts behind the scenes are literally saving the day, ensuring that students are enrolled, compliant, and ready to start their studies.

Shining a spotlight on our heroes

After seeing them move mountains in the past few weeks, we wanted to take a moment to recognise these unsung heroes. Their tireless efforts deserve to be celebrated, and today we’re spotlighting standout staff members who have gone above and beyond:

1. Angel, University of Portsmouth: A truly inspiring dedication, consistently driving enrolments and supporting her team.

2. Alison, University of Greenwich: Always ready to go the extra mile, her dedication has been instrumental in getting students across the finish line.

3. Monica, University of Derby: Leading with efficiency, Monica has ensured smooth processing and compliance in a tough climate.

4. Cath, University of South Wales: Cath’s perseverance and hands-on approach have been crucial in maintaining momentum in student recruitment.

5. Dilip and Smita, Anglia Ruskin University: This unstoppable duo has worked relentlessly, ensuring students are compliant and enrolled on time.

6. Andrei, University of Law: Andrei’s unwavering commitment has played a key role in maintaining high standards.

These individuals are just a few examples of the many who have stepped up in a time of need, and we owe them our gratitude, appreciation and respect.

Staff & Agent - unique users (2024)

  • Staff and agents are working deep into the Sept ‘24 intake
  • Sustained activity since June ‘24, showing unwavering commitment

The data clearly tells the story

Our data backs this up. Since the May downturn, we’ve seen a sustained peak of activity on CAS Shield from staff and agents alike. Payments have come later this year, but that hasn’t stopped the flow of students enrolling, thanks to the hard work of these teams.

In a climate dominated by negative stories about university finances, policy changes, and immigration debates, the importance of the international student sector cannot be overstated. This industry is vital not only to the UK economy but to global education and cultural exchange. We could have given up, but we didn’t.

A positive outlook

As we move into the final phase of the September 2024 intake, let’s take a moment to recognise the resilience, adaptability, and sheer determination of the people behind the scenes. Their work has made all the difference, and their efforts continue to drive us forward.

To everyone in admissions, compliance, and recruitment teams thank you. You are the heartbeat of this industry, and your impact is felt every single day.
